The American Legion is an organization of veterans serving veterans, their families and communities. The Legion serves as the veteran's voice in Washington, fighting for the benefits and rights of those who served our country in the armed forces.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide.

American Legion High Desert Post 56 Membership Drive for 2020-2021 is on!

Calling all Veterans; Calling all American Legion Members!!....with the end of June, we close out the 2019-2020 membership year.  For High Desert Post 56, it was one of our more successful membership drives in recent memory, thanks to the hard work of a few post members (Leon W. in particular).  July begins a new year: the 2020-2021 membership drive is on. We ask/encourage all who are not "life" members to renew.  And if you're a veteran who's been sitting on the fence, now's a a great time to join:

Post 56 annual dues for 2020-2021 are still only $35.00.

If you do not qualify because you are not a veteran or you did not serve during the prescribed dates, but one of your male ancestors (father, grandfather, etc.) did,  you may be eligible to become a member of the SAL.

The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion. The SAL is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion. Together, members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of The American Legion make up what is known as The Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.

  • A woman who is eligible for membership in The American Legion is also eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary.
  • The mother, wife, daughter, sister, grand-daughter, great-grand-daughter, or grandmother of members of The American Legion, and deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war eras is also eligible.
  • Step relatives are also eligible.
